Jury Trial for Brutal San Angelo Bar Murder Begins

SAN ANGELO, TX – Jury selection in the murder trial for Jose 'Joe Angel' Trevino for the brutal stomping death of Jason Garivay begins Monday in San Angelo.  

As previously reported, on Jul. 10, 2021, Trevino was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and murder. He is accused of kicking and stomping Jason Garivay so severely  in the Park 2400 parking lot following a fight that Garivay later died. Trevino and Garivay got into a fight after leaving the Penny Tap House that night. *Note: Since the murder the Penny Tap House has changed owners and is now the Penny Bar and Grill. Surveillance footage shows both the victim and Trevino leaving the bar. It also shows Garivay's body be put in a car before being taken to Shannon. That is where he died from his injuries.

Currently Texas has a mutual combat rule. It is unknown if this will be used in the case. In Texas though, if both parties mutually agree to fight than it can be an alternative to a civil or criminal suit.

On Monday both the District Attorney's Office and Defense Attorney Rae Leifeste began jury selection. It is likely that they will complete the jury selection process and opening statements will begin late Monday afternoon to early Tuesday morning.
