Siblings John Farris and Shelly Banks held a cook-off on Saturday in order to raise money for their late mother’s cancer treatments after over six weeks of preparation.
Little River Club was filled with the aroma of cooking meat as cooks from across the area competed. Other events held for the benefit included $10 lunches, a poker run, live music and silent and live auctions.
According to Banks, Elaine Farris passed away four weeks ago before her children could finish preparing the benefit.
“[The benefit] was actually my brother John Farris’s idea when our mother was diagnosed with cancer,” said Shannon Clinic business office employee Shelly Banks. “Unfortunately we lost her before we could do the benefit. It was something [my brother] really wanted to do to help my parents with medical expenses.”
Seasoned cooks vied for donated plaques by preparing brisket, chicken, and ribs. Several of the 15 to 20 competitors are seasoned cooks, including John Farris himself.
“I was out here all night cooking seven briskets,” said U.S. Air Force Recreation Camp manager John Farris. “I fell asleep on the cooker.”
Banks has also lost her 41-year-old husband and an aunt to cancer. She wished to express her gratitude to those who helped with the benefit, including Darnell Construction, the Little River Club, Julio’s, family, and friends.
