Family Fun Day Festivities in Full Swing Saturday

Residents flocked to the Celebration Bridge for the third annual Outdoor Family Fun Day on Saturday.

Families were invited to fish and a license was not required. Other activities included a concert by Thieves of Sunrise, kayaking, face painting and various concessions.

Anastacio Romero, safety manager for Pride Transport Services, fished at the event with his wife Nicky and his sons Thomas, Seth, Connor and Stewart.

“We thought [fishing] would be something fun to do,” Romero said. “Get out of the house, get out from in front of the stupid tube and enjoy some time together.”

Tom Green County Game Warden Ricky May was present, instructing families on the regulations of fishing and hunting. Aside from teaching children about the reasons behind bag limits, May also encouraged families to fish.

“Once you figure out your niche, what you really like the best, than you can go from there,” May said. “You can go all the way up to saltwater or you can come all the way back down to fly fishing. There’s a broad range there.”

Free kayaking was a popular activity for those participating in Family Fun Day. Taylor Cole, owner Cole’s Army Surplus, led the kayaking festivities. Cole said that he has kayaked for about 30 years.

“[Kayaking] is incredible,” Cole said. “It’s calm, it’s peaceful, it’s relaxing. And that’s what I want people to enjoy about the outdoors.”

Romero fishes with his sons often and said that he enjoys “chilling out” with his family and the excitement he feels when he or one of his sons land a fish.

“It’s good quality time with your family and kids,” Romero said. “I’m glad this [Family Fun Day] is out here.”
