COVER1 Hoops: Concho Valley Preview Feb. 10

SAN ANGELO, TX — Several Concho Valley Basketball Teams play district games across West Texas on Friday, Feb. 10. Here are the matchups. Tune in at 4 p.m. every Friday for our COVER1 Hoops Show. This week we have an exclusive interview with Central Lady Cats Head Coach Arsenio Geter. We also will have a preview and our predictions of this weekend's games.

SAN ANGELO CENTRAL AT FRENSHIP

The Bobcats ride a four-game winning streak going into tonight’s matchup against the Frenship Tigers. The Tigers sit alone in first place at 7-1, with their lone defeat in the district at the hands of the Central Bobcats in overtime, 62-60.

Central matches up well against Frenship. Their defense does an excellent job of clogging the passing lanes, flying to potential shooters, and keeping potential scorers out of the paint. Senior Jacob English turned up his performances during this win streak and is arguably one of the most dangerous scorers on the team. Central needs to control the flow and pace of this game, rely on the scorers, like English, that are on fire, and try to limit the damage Frenship can do from beyond the arc.

The Bobcats sit in a 2-way tie for second place with Odessa High behind Frenship. Central needs to win one of the next two to guarantee a playoff spot. However, if the ‘Cats win tonight and Frenship drops their season finale next week, the Bobcats can win the district championship.

JIM NED AT WALL/TLCA AT MERKEL

The Wall Hawks host the Jim Ned Indians in Wall on Friday night, and the TLCA Eagles travel to Merkel to play the Badgers.

Now, these teams are included together this week because three of them represent a three-way tie for first place in District 6-3A. TLCA, Wall, and Jim Ned spent the district season beating each other, and now all three sit at 10-2. The final two games of the regular season will determine who claims the district title.

Wall, by far, has the hardest road to the championship. However, with that being said, they also control their destiny moving forward. The Hawks host Jim Ned on Friday and then take the short trip to San Angelo the following Tuesday to play the TLCA Eagles.

Wall needs to win both these matchups to claim the district title, but that will not be easy. While the Hawks control their destiny by playing these two teams, the Indians and Eagles are also 10-2. They are head and shoulders above the rest of the district in terms of wins and skill.

The Hawks defeated Jim Ned at Tuscola the first time these two teams played, and Wall has to have a repeat performance. If they win, that sets up a district championship game in San Angelo on Tuesday.

TLCA travels to Merkel to play the Badgers on Friday night. The Eagles beat the Badgers their first time around and hope to make it 2/2 on the year. The Eagles controlled their district for much of the season before dropping their make-up game to the Clyde Bulldogs last Saturday. That loss set up this winner-take-all scenario moving forward.

The Eagles need to show up tonight and play their best to ensure they put themselves in position for the championship game on Tuesday.

LAKE VIEW AT SNYDER

The Lake View Chiefs travel to Snyder on Friday to play the Snyder Tigers. The Chiefs have had a tough season this year and sit at 1-7 in district. Although they show flashes of brilliance at times, Lake View struggles to put everything together throughout the course of an entire game.

The Snyder Tigers pose another winnable game for Lake View if they can come together as a team. The Chief’s offense runs through Tony Cabrerra and RJ Bohannon. Both of these young men need to have big games tonight if Lake View wants to make it back into the win column.

CHRISTOVAL AT REAGAN COUNTY

The Chritoval Cougars and Reagan County Owls are in a similar situation to the San Angelo Central Bobcats. Reagan County holds a two-game lead over the Cougars, and Christoval has a chance to get one of those games back on Friday. The first time these two teams squared off, it took until the final seconds for a winner to be decided.

The Cougars have to hit their free throws if they want to win this game. Last time, Christoval missed too many uncontested shots. Reagan County’s offense continues to churn, so the Cougars need a solid defensive effort to claim victory.
