COVER1 Hoops: Concho Valley Roundup Feb. 2-4

SAN ANGELO, TX — Several Concho Valley Basketball teams saw action over the weekend. Feb. 2-4. Here are the results.

SAN ANGELO CENTRAL (22-7)(4-3) 56 ODESSA PERMIAN 53

The ‘Cats traveled to Odessa on Friday, Feb. 3, to play the Permian Panthers. Trailing for almost the entire contest, the Bobcats stayed within striking distance of the Panthers. Central shot 44% from three, and because of that, Permian never built a large enough lead to pull away. Oustanding defense from Kollin Allbright in the second half caused Permian to turn the ball over several times in the 4th quarter, and the ‘Cats took advantage at the other end. Central finally took control with less than five minutes to play and held on for the win.

The first time these two teams squared off, Permian had an insane shooting night. However, the ‘Cats’ defense proved too much for the Panthers this time as they only shot 40% from the floor. Central avenged their loss earlier in the season and kept their playoff hopes alive when they won 56-53. 

LADY CATS (20-12)(7-2) 62 LADY PANTHERS 47

The Lady Cats extended their win streak to seven games last Friday. The Ladies controlled the game from start to finish to move to 7-2 in the district. Central finishes its regular season at home against Midland High on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

TLCA EAGLES (23-6)(9-2)

The TLCA Eagles played back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4. On Friday, the Eagles won a decisive victory at home against the Ballinger Bearcats 69-31. The next day, TLCA traveled to Clyde to play a make-up game against the Clyde Bulldogs. Like the first time these two teams squared off, which TLCA won by two points, another heated matchup ensued. Clyde flipped the script on TLCA and won 55-53.

The Eagles now have to win the remainder of their games to win their district. The Eagles travel to Coahoma on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to play the Coahoma Bulldogs.

MILES BULLDOGS (24-4)(6-1)

The Miles Bulldogs notched two district wins and retained first place in their district. On Friday, the Bulldogs beat the Coleman Bluecats 53-39. Miles played their makeup game against the Winters Blizzards on Saturday and came home with a decisive victory, 70-44.

The Bulldogs travel to Colorado City on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to play the Wolves.

IRION COUNTY HORNETS (14-1)(7-0)

The State Ranked Hornets hosted Garden City on Friday for a district matchup. Garden City posed a serious threat to the Hornets, but Irion County showed up ready to play and downed the Bearkats 57-45.

Irion County travels to Veribest on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Ladies play for a district championship while the boys try to cement their spot in first place.

CHRISTOVAL COUGARS (18-12)(9-2) AND LADY COUGARS (19-12)(11-2)

The Cougars and Lady Cougars played two games from Thursday, Feb. 2, to Saturday, Feb. 4. Both teams swept their opponents to claim two district victories each. The Lady Cougars beat Water Valley on Thursday, 60-50, and then Sonora on Friday, 68-30.

The Cougars beat Sonora on Friday, 74-44, and then defeated Water Valley on Saturday in their make-up game, 64-43.

Christoval travels to Sterling City on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to play the Eagles in a contest determining who will get 2nd place in the district. The Ladies host the Lady Eagles in their pursuit of cementing 2nd place in the district.
