Lady Hawks Bounce Back Against Coahoma; Hawks Dominate at Home

After the make-up game loss to the Lady Bearcats on Thursday evening, the Lady Hawks responded with fire and determination. While they let the Lady Bearcats control the boards and make outside shots against them, Wall shut down the Lady Bulldogs in every aspect of the game. 

Kamryn Williams started strong for Wall and built a solid lead. Points in transition, mostly from the fast break, fueled the Lady Hawks’ victory. Renly Weishuhn came alive in the second half and took over scoring from Williams. Hannah Burk contributed a quiet seven points interspersed throughout the evening, and Wall beat Coahoma 56-25.

Kamryn Williams led the Lady Hawks with 16 points.

The win on Friday night sets the Lady Hawks up with a crucial matchup against the Merkel Lady Badgers on Tuesday, Feb. 7. With the loss to Ballinger, Wall fell to 3rd place in district behind Merkel. The Ladies need this win to take back 2nd place and improve their seeding for playoffs.

Wall’s defense showed up ready to play early in the first quarter. Forcing several early turnovers and bad shots from Coahoma, Wall took advantage on the other end of the floor to build an early lead. Sophomore Forward Lane Stansberry scored Wall’s first 7-points before anyone else on the team got involved. Wall led 15-10 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Coahoma’s 3-point shooting kept them in the contest early in the game, but soon misses allowed the Hawks to pull further away. Angelo State commit Everson Armstrong took over the game in the second quarter. He made several baskets on drives in the paint, secured more than five rebounds, and even hit a three. Wall headed to the locker room at the break up 33-19.

Armstrong continued to dominate with 19 points through three quarters, and Augden Hallmark added his dangerous range to the mix to put the game away by the end of the 3rd quarter, 52-29.

Several underclassmen on Wall’s bench got some much-needed experience during the 4th quarter, but the Hawks’ offense fell apart. Despite leading by 23 at the end of the 3rd quarter, Wall only managed one point during the 4th. While this worked out for the Hawks with an insurmountable lead, this will not go well for them come playoff time. 

Regardless of the poor 4th quarter, the Hawks secured their 8th district win and improved to 8-2 overall. The Hawks travel to Merkel on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to play the Badgers immediately following the Lady Hawks’ game.
