Big Country Wind Driven Wildfire Brought Under Control Overnight

THROCKMORTON, TX – A wind driven wildfire blew up in the Big Country Wednesday night during that Red Flag Warning and burned out of control for several hours before being brought under control by the Texas A&M Forest Service and volunteer crews.  

According to the Forest Service Facebook, the Cedar Hills fire, located in Throckmorton County on the R.A. Brown Ranch about 40 miles north of Abilene, had burned about 150 acres by the time firefighters arrived Wednesday afternoon. 

Crews cut a fire break line completely around the fire by 11 p.m. Wednesday night.  

The Forest Service reports Thursday morning the fire has burned 695 acres and is now completely contained.  

The National Weather Service in San Angelo had issued a Red Flag Warning for extreme wildfire danger for the Big Country and the Concho Valley that was in effect from noon to midnight Wednesday because of the high winds, low humidity and extremely dry fuels.  

The Cedar Hills wildfire is the only fire reported in the area to the Forest Service Wednesday.
