CINCINNATI, OH — In a horrific and scary situation, Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin collapsed to the ground during the 1st quarter after a routine tackle on Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin initially stood up after the tackle but immediately grasped his facemask and fell back to the ground.
Medical personel first suspected a head injury but later had to administer CPR for an extended period of time to the 24-year-old. Both benches cleared and huddled around the midfield marker, with several Bills teammates showing distraught emotions. Several players kneeled on the ground, visibly shaking, crying, and praying.
Medical professionals loaded Hamlin into an ambulance, and Hamlin was taken to a hospital. Both teams looked in shock afterward as Bills’ Head Coach Sean McDermott gathered his players together and said a prayer for Hamlin. Both teams’ head coaches got together with the game officials and decided to leave the field and head back to their respective locker rooms.
The football game is delayed until further notice. If the game resumes or is delayed further, the final decision will come from NFL Commissioner Roger Gooddell. This is a situation where the player's well-being is much bigger than the game.
UPDATE: Later, word came from NFL Headquarters in New York that the game was suspended until a later date. Hamlin has been transported to a local hospital and is listed as in critical condition.
The NFL made an official statement.
