Legendary Punter Ray Guy has Died

HATTIESBURG, MISS --- NFL Hall of Fame Punter and three-time super bowl champion Ray Guy has died. He was 72. Announced by his alma mater, Southern Mississippi, Guy passed following a lengthy battle with illness. 

Widely considered the greatest punter of all time, the Hall of Famer played 14 seasons and won three super bowl championships (Super Bowl XI, XV, and XVIII) with the Raiders. He was the first punter to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1976 and the first pure punter to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2014. 

He was a three-time All-Pro selection and made the NFL’s All-Time Team and the 1970s All-Decade Team. Guy ended his NFL career with only three blocked punts and 619 punts in a row without a block. He revolutionized his position with how high he kicked the ball and how well he could pin the opponents deep into their territory. He was one of the main reasons why punting focuses on hang time. 

Guy also is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. The Ray Guy Award is given to College Football’s top punter annually and named after the special team’s legend.
