SAN ANGELO- The Lake View Chiefs need a win this week to stay in the playoff picture.
Last week, the Chiefs lost to the Brownwood Lions 60-13 on Thursday night and are now currently 0-2 in district play. The last two realignments left Lake View in a four-team district but this season, they could be on the outside looking in. Right now, Lake View is in 5th place and they need to be in at least fourth to make the post-season.
The standing at this moment:
- Brownwood- 6-2, 2-0
- Estacado- 4-3, 1-0
- Andrews- 5-3, 1-1
- Big Spring- 4-3, 0-1
- Lake View- 3-5, 0-2
We could see a dogfight between the Chiefs and the Steers. They do have a couple common opponents in Lubbock, Sweetwater, and Brownwood. Of those three games, both Lake View and Big Spring beat Sweetwater and Lubbock and both lost to Brownwood.
- Big Spring vs. Lubbock, 51-26 (W)
- Big Spring vs. Sweetwater, 20-7 (W)
- Big Spring vs. Brownwood, 10-41 (L)
- Lake View vs. Lubbock, 35-21 (W)
- Lake View vs. Sweetwater, 39-25 (W)
- Lake View vs. Brownwood, 13-60 (L)
Last season, the Chiefs beat the Steers 49-35.
The Chiefs aren’t hopeless either. Yes, they did dig themselves an insurmountable hole against the Lions in the 1st quarter. Ricky Ramirez and Ian Cortez combined had 127 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Bryce Medley went 16-26 for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Medley connected with Manley, Robles, and Flores and gave the Lions some trouble picking on the right side of their defense.
The Chiefs also put up 275 yards of offense against a really good Lions team. They did have a couple good drives, but one ended in a fumble in the redzone.
The Big Spring Steers are in 4th place right now and have only played one district game as last week they had their bye. They’ve scored 180 points, or just under 26 points per game but they’ve given up 208 total points or just under 30 points a game.
This is one of the tougher districts in high school football and the Chiefs need to focus on one game at a time and beat the Steers if they want to squeak into the playoffs.
