Here's When West Texas Will Get a Break from the Triple Digit Heat

SAN ANGELO – There are no Heat Advisories, Excessive Heat Warnings or Red Flag Warnings for the Concho Valley Thursday, but the triple digit heat is here to stay at least for the next week.

According to weather experts from the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, the intense heat will continue with record highs expected Saturday and Sunday and afternoon high temperatures will reach 100 degrees every day until at least next Wednesday.

There is no significant rain in the forecast at all.

The longer the unseasonably intense heat continues, the more water evaporates from area reservoirs, crops will wither and be damaged, wildlife populations will suffer and livestock will produce fewer offspring and residents will not have to mow as often.

And while the intense heat continues and groundwater is pumped for human use and for crops, water tables in area aquifers will drop as well.  Look for small, spring fed creeks and streams to be affected first then more major river systems and bodies of water will begin to show the effects of the ongoing and intensifying drought.

Residents are urged to continue to exercise extreme caution when working or recreating outdoors.  Drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing and stay in the shade when you can.  Better yet, stay in an air-conditioned building and check on vulnerable friends and family.

Remember never, ever leave a child or a pet in a locked vehicle.  Temperatures can reach lethal levels in a matter of minutes and one child has died in Texas this year after being left unattended in a car.

This is an ongoing serious and potentially dangerous weather situation.  Residents are urged to monitor news sources regularly for further information.
