SAN ANGELO – Saturday May 21 is Armed Forces Day in the United States and San Angelo will celebrate the day with special events at Ft. Concho.
Armed Forces Day 2022 will be celebrated on Saturday, May 21st. This holiday pays tribute to men and women who serve across all six branches in the United States military.
Starting May 21st until September 5th, as part of the Blue Star Museum program, active-duty military and their families will be able to tour Fort Concho for free.
Fort Concho will be offering free self-guided tours to all active-duty military.
According to information from Ft. Concho, veterans will be welcomed for free as well.
The first Armed Forces day was proclaimed by Presidential Proclamation in 1950, but not observed until May that year. President Truman declared, "Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first formal procession of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense."

Fort Concho will hold its annual Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, May 21, with hourly artillery salutes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the site’s Parade Ground near the Visitor Center at Barracks 1, 630 South Oakes. The event is free to the public.
The site’s display and exhibit buildings will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In honor of the day and our armed forces, any active-duty member and all family members may enjoy the fort at no charge.
Members of the fort’s living history program will have a display of items on the porch of Barracks 1 as part of Armed Forces Day.
