The Angelo State University Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present a free public concert titled “Night of Brass” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in the ASU Auditorium located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N.
Concert participants will include the ASU Trumpet Ensemble, the ASU Tuba-Euphonium Quartet, the SAISD Trumpet Ensemble and the San Angelo Area High School Select Trumpet Ensemble.
The ASU Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John Irish, performs regularly in concert as well as in collaboration with nationally known performers. In 2014, the ensemble traveled to Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and New York City to work with top performers in area orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz groups and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
The ASU Tuba-Euphonium Quartet is a student-led and –directed ensemble open to all university students.
The SAISD Trumpet Ensemble comprises six San Angelo Independent School District music teachers who are also trumpet players. The ensemble is excited to perform demanding works from the repertoire for trumpet.
The San Angelo Area High School Select Trumpet Ensemble includes students from Central, Lake View, Christoval and Water Valley high schools who met weekly to prepare for this concert.
The program will include “Path of Discovery” and “Conquest” by Erik Morales, “Fantasia Brasiliera” by Jose Ursicino da Silva, “Trumpet Salutations” by Nigel Coombes, “Rondeau” by Jean-Joseph Mouret, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, “Psalm 19: The Heavens Declare The Glory of God” by Benedetto Marcello, “Lute Dances” by Anonymous, “Washington Post March” by John Philip Sousa, “Tuba Turf” by Lennie Niehaus and “Voluntary for Brass” arranged by Dr. John Irish, ASU professor of music.
