ELDORADO, TX- Eldorado High School senior Korbin Covarrubiaz has signed to play college ball at Sul Ross State University.
“Today, we gather here to celebrate a young man, a family, and a great community,” Eagles head coach Jon Long said, “Korbin, I know your parents, Kenny and Vanessa, your brothers, Kevin and Kory are super proud of you and so happy for all that you accomplished. Their excited to see what’s going to be in your next chapter.”
Covarrubiaz put up monster numbers this season from the quarterback position throwing for 2,291 yards, 35 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and rushing for 689 yards and 15 touchdowns. Korbin put up big play after big play to lead Eldorado to a 10-2 overall record.
Once in the playoffs, Covarrubiaz and the Eagles went three rounds deep, beating Somerville 35-33 and D’Hanis 27-14. In the third round, the Eagles fell to state runner-up Falls City 50-26.

“I want you to think about what got you to this place. Your teammates, your parents, your family, your community, your coaches, your teachers. All the way back to Coach Mitchell in elementary,” Long said, “These are people that have been there for you and will be there for you in the future. But the cool thing about going to college and competing in athletics is you’re going to have a new family. You’re going to come across new coaches, new teammates, new friends. Lifelong friends as well. Sul Ross and Alpine is a very tightknit group and much like Eldorado. So, we’re really happy that you found this home.”
Korbin took over at quarterback as a junior in Jon Long’s first year as the Eagles head coach where he also put-up gaudy numbers. Covarrubiaz went 146-279 for 2,449 yards, 31 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions. On the ground, Korbin racked up another 434 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Eldorado was forced to forfeit their postseason due to COVID that season.
“I can’t tell you how proud we are to be able to introduce you to the Lobo family,” Long continued, “As you sign this letter, I want you to think about the commitment that you’re making. You’re signing your name to this. You’re putting your name on something and that means a lot. Your word and your name are important.”
