San Angelo, TX- The NFL lost a legend today as John Madden passed away unexpectedly at the age of 85.
In 10 seasons as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Madden brought the franchise it’s first championship. Madden never had a losing season and piled up a 103-32-7 record and was the youngest head coach to hit 100 wins at age 42. He also holds the best winning percentage (.759), by an NFL head coach with a minimum of 10 season.
Madden retired from coaching in 1979 and became one of the most well-known color commentators on NFL broadcasts from 1979 to 2008.
John Madden entered the Hall of Fame as a coach in 2006.
“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe, and their families. We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.
