Four Fun Things to do in San Angelo over Spring Break

While some San Angelo students set off for seaside settings this Spring Break, several local community organizations will host weeklong camps and other events targeted at children and teens.

Unless you had the foresight to plan far in advance, however, those who haven’t registered for much of the city’s goings-on will be limited to slim pickings this week, as spaces have filled and camps are full.

Still there are a few events going on around town that are targeted to children, teens and families and require no pre-registration or hefty fee.

San Angelo State Park

Every day throughout Spring Break, Texas Parks and Wildlife Rangers will host an activity open to all ages at the San Angelo State Park. There is no limit on participants and in order to participate, one must only pay the entry fee of $4 for children 13 and up. Those under 13 are free.

The activities include a Bird Walk Adventure on Monday, Permian Tracks Tour on Tuesday, a Petroglyphs Tour on Wednesday, a Longhorn/Bison Tour on Thursday and Fishing with a Ranger on Friday.

Ceramics Painting

You Can DO It Ceramics, a local open painting studio that offers a variety of painting projects such as ceramic mugs, plates, animals and Star Wars characters, will be open Wednesday through Saturday this week.

Prices vary depending on the ceramic project selected, averaging at about $8 per plate and $5 for mugs. Paints are .50 cents per color unless the item is intended for foodservice, in which underglaze colors run $3.60 per bottle and a clear coat runs another $2.65. A firing fee is also added, bringing the average cost of a foodsafe project up to approximately $20.

You Can DO It offers projects starting at $1 and increasing to $50 or more. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Art Thursdays and Art Walk

As with every week, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will be hosting Art Thursday during Spring Break, a creative mixed-media art session that usually centers around one project but always includes drawing and water coloring.

Art Thursdays are generally targeted at children aged 3-12 years old, but everyone is allowed to participate at no cost. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

On Thursday evening, the monthly Art Walk will take place downtown, beginning with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and continuing through several local art venues, restaurants and a coffee shop. This month the focus will be on ARTpreneurs at the Small Business Development Center.

Fun on the Water

Those wanting to catch some rays and go for dip have many options around Lake Nasworthy, which due to abundant rains over the past several months, is still full.

Campouts are allowed in two of the local parks, including Spring Creek and Middle Concho, both of which cost $3 per carload per day and $6 to camp for natives, while the numbers double for out-of-towners.

Those just looking to spend some time out on the water’s edge without an overnight stay will flock to Mary E. Lee beach, which is free to the public and has maintained dirt shores and trash bins. Picnic areas are set up near the water’s edge all around the lake, but shady spots go quick and so do the grills, so if your plan is to cookout and spend the afternoon outdoors, you’d do well to arrive early.
