MIDLAND, TX- The Midland crosstown rivalry continues when the Midland Bulldogs play the Midland Legacy Rebels in a district contest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
The Midland Bulldogs (2-5) don’t really have a standout when it comes to stats. Both quarterback Landry Walls and running back Zion Ward have over 600 rushing yards each.
Over 7 games, Walls has only thrown it 79 times and completed 38 of those for 574 yards and 4 touchdowns. That makes sense when you factor in Midland runs the triple option offense
Has a team, Midland has 2011 rushing yards which breaks down to 287.3 yards a game. That’s a very good number when you look at Legacy’s rushing totals for the season.
On the ground, the Legacy Rebels (6-1) have 1815 yards rushing for 259.3 yards a game. The Legacy offense has all-star running back Mahkilyn Young, who is ranked 11th in the state in rushing yards. Young is also ranked 2nd in the state in touchdowns.
But Midland Legacy isn’t all about the rushing stats. Rebel quarterback Marcos Davila has put up decent numbers despite the running game. Davila has 95 completions for 1,661 yards and 14 touchdowns.
30 of those completions have gone to Chris Brazzell who, in turn, has taken 5 of those catches for touchdowns. Donny Bishop, who is listed as a running back/wide receiver, has 34 touches for 621 total yards, and 8 touchdowns.
Add in other Rebels like receivers Nate Suttle and Addison Akbar and you end up with a top-to-bottom good team.
Even on defense where senior linebacker Jeremiah Alvarado leads the team in tackles for loss and sacks with 15 and 7 respectively and defensive back John Washington who has 4 interceptions, you’ve got playmakers all over.
The Rebels are averaging 4 sacks and 1.3 turnovers a game. For all the nerds out there, who want to look even further at things that effect games, Legacy has 35 quarterback hurries and 19 passes defended.
There just isn’t much weakness for the Rebels. Even when taking out Young’s yardage, Legacy is still a quality team. Young has averaged 203.8 yards a game of the 500.9 yards total for Midland Legacy. That means the rest of the team is averaging 297.1 yards a game.
There hasn’t been a team in district play that has stopped the onslaught that the Rebels leave in their wake. Over the 3 district games they’ve played so far, they’ve averaged 175 points for to 61 points against.
The Bulldogs have their work cut out for them and COVER1 will be there for coverage, analysis, and highlights so tune into the COVER1 show on SanAngeloLIVE.com at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
