Can Rocksprings upset the Red Hot Eldorado Eagles Friday Night?

ELDORADO, TX – The Rocksprings Angoras will travel up Highway 277 to square off against the Eldorado Eagles Friday night.

What does Rocksprings have to do to snag a win?

The number one problem is Korbin Covarrubiaz. The Eagle quarterback has accounted for 1,475 total yards on the season and that is only through 4 games. Covarrubiaz is averaging 368.8 yards a game and, excluding the Miles game, 25 touchdowns.

Coming in number 2 for Eldorado is James Kimble who has 477 yards on the season and 3 touchdowns.

To stop the Eldorado Eagles, you must stop Covarrubiaz. Thing is, Korbin’s been unstoppable this season.

Enter Rocksprings sophomore running back Beau Hernandez. The Angora back has 648 yards on the season for an average of 119.3 yard a game. The Angora signal caller, Viera, has 471 rushing yards this year.

The Angoras average 310.6 yards a game on the ground and only 20.2 yards passing. Rocksprings needs to keep the clock running and give Eldorado as little of time that they can on offense.

Last week against Miles, Eldorado had a rough start to the game with a turnover on downs on the first drive. What really put the Eagles behind the 8-ball was the mishandling of snap. On Eldorado’s first offensive play Korbin failed to handle the snap and had to take a loss of yards.

Eldorado gave Miles the ball around the 50-yard line and after not being able to move the ball punted. The Eldorado punt returner muffed the punt nearly gave it back to Miles.

Gaffs like these will cost dearly in the playoffs and if Rocksprings plays smart and if they can run the ball successfully, they can give Eldorado their first loss of the season.

After last week, you can bet Eagle Head Coach Jon Long has been preaching to his team about execution and his team is experienced enough to overcome a bad start.

Not to get too far ahead but next week could decide the district champions as Eldorado will travel up Highway 277 and face the Christoval Cougars (5-1). If Rocksprings wants to remain in the conversation for district champs, they must take care of business this week as two losses would all but end that dream.
