AUSTIN – A former chief strategist to President George W. Bush turned liberal political analyst for ABC News is running for the Democratic nomination for Texas Lt. Gov. in an attempt to challenge Texas GOP Lt. Governor Dan Patrick in 2022.
Matthew Dowd was a liberal democrat operative in Texas before joining President Bush's GOP team. Dowd for years has been the liberal voice in politics for the ABC television network national news.

Dowd joins liberal perennial Democrat Mike Collier in the left's primary to challenge Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.
In the months since leaving his position as the chief political analyst at ABC News, Dowd has ramped up his public criticism of Republican leaders in Texas. He said in an interview with Texas Monthly that he was considering a run for a statewide seat in 2022, but at the time had just ruled out a run for governor.
"I don't want to get in a debate in a governor's race, which would become exceedingly high intensity, about “the former Bush guy,” “the former Republican” running," he said in the interview.
The 2022 primary election in Texas is currently set for March. Depending on when the Texas legislature approves redistricting maps, that election date could shift to April or May for the November 2022 General Election.
