Closings and Delays for Saturday, Feb. 28

Winter weather and icy roads continue Saturday morning, spurring more delays, closings and warnings due to hazardous road conditions.

The National Weather Service in San Angelo is forecasting a high of 34 degrees for Saturday, with a windchill between 20 and 26 throughout the day. Freezing drizzle in some parts of town is anticipated through 3 p.m., followed by drizzle through the afternoon and evening and a 20 percent chance of showers Saturday night. 

Due to the temperature, ice still coats the roads and emergency personnel warn against any travel (foot or vehicle), unless absolutely necessary until surface conditions improve. If walking, use extra care or walk on grass, as there have been several ambulance calls for persons that have fallen on the ice. 

At 10:43 a.m., emergency personnel issued an extreme travel warning, noting a high number of stranded motorists, including police units. SAPD is "urging citizens to please stay off the roadways. Conditions are making it nearly impossible to respond safely to calls for service".

Due to the weather, the following closings and delays are in effect:

Bank of San Angelo is closed.
Community Health Club classes are cancelled for Saturday, and the nursery will not open until 1 p.m.
Concho Pearl Ice House is opening for dinner service at 5 p.m.
Create A Cig is closed.
Howard College Saturday classes are cancelled.
Miles of Bling Boutique is closed.
Pecos Street Laundry is closed.
Railway Museum of San Angelo is closed.
San Angelo Federal Credit Union drive-through is closed.
Zero One Ale House will open at 4 p.m. The grand opening of the brewery is slated for next Saturday. The new beers will be sold today.

Airport

Runways at San Angelo Regional Airport have been closed until at least 1 p.m. because of icy conditions.  American Airlines has cancelled its 11:39 a.m. arrival, its 10:36 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 3:42 p.m. departures.

Garbage

Republic Services has suspended garbage collection today because roadways are too treacherous for its trucks. Residential customers will receive service on their next scheduled day. Commercial customers should receive service Monday. If they don't, they may contact Republic at 325-481-7700 to request pickup.

Road Warnings from DPS

Interstate 20 (as of 8:30 p.m. Friday): The road conditions throughout the Big Country are worsening, the biggest problem area being IH-20. The packed snow and what little melting we had throughout the day is quickly icing over making travel near impossible in places. DPS units may have trouble getting to motorists due to the number of crashes (80 since midnight) and the degrading road conditions. Unprepared motorists could put themselves, family, and others in danger of getting hurt or stranded in these extremely cold temperatures. Travel should be limited to emergencies only. With more precipitation in the forecast, it may even get worse. Travelers can call  1 (800) 452-9292 for Texas road conditions.
