Angelo State University Sees Uptick in Enrollment

After two years of decreasing spring enrollment, Angelo State University posted a slight increase in student numbers this semester, led by another record graduate school enrollment, resulting in a total of 5,963 students attending the university this spring.

Graduate enrollment reached 1,108, which is 118 more than the 990 grad students who enrolled last spring. This marks the 11^th consecutive long semester in which the College of Graduate Studies has recorded a new enrollment high.

Increases were also seen in freshman and junior enrollment while sophomore enrollment remained fairly steady, resulting in a total undergraduate enrollment of 4,855 students this spring, down just 38 students from the 4,893 enrolled in the spring of 2014. The overall decrease in undergraduate numbers is mainly due to a drop in the number of seniors on campus. That was to be expected after a larger-than-usual graduation class last spring, which was a product of ASU’s rising graduation rates.

The 2015 overall spring headcount was 5,963, compared to 5,883 the previous spring, marking a 1.4 percent increase.

ASU President Brian J. May said, “The increase in freshman enrollment is especially pleasing because it shows that our undergraduate recruitment and retention strategies are continuing to move us in the right direction. Meanwhile, the continued growth in our College of Graduate Studies is yet another testimonial to the quality of our graduate academic programs, many of which are now available totally online, are receiving national recognition, and are drawing students from outside our region.”

The enrollment totals were counted as of the 20^th class day.            

Comparisons by classification of the spring 2015 and 2014 enrollment numbers were:

Total graduate and undergraduate semester credit hours for this spring also increased to 72,401, compared to last spring’s 71,877.

ASU’s spring enrollment includes students from 220 Texas counties, 47 states and 29 countries.
