SOUTHLAKE,TX – The nation's top high school prospect has decided to forgo his senior season of high school to enroll at Ohio State.
Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers has decided to enroll at Ohio State and not play his senior season at Southlake Carroll.
About a month ago, the NCAA began student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness (NIL) and Ewers stands to make 7 figures off of endorsements, something he couldn’t do in high school.
Ewers said in a twitter post that it wasn’t just based on financial decisions but started weighing options once the UIL informed him he could not profit off his name, image, or likeness.
Quinn Ewers missed 6 games as a junior and finished the 2020 season with 2,442 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 5interceptions. His career touchdown to interception ratio is 73-8.
Ohio State is replacing Justin Fields who was the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Other quarterbacks on Ohio State’s roster consist of C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller, and Kyle McCord.
Stroud and Miller both came with the 2020 class and were ranked 104 and 284 respectively. McCord signed this year and was the 31st best overall prospect. Ewers will have a chance to compete for the starting job this fall.
Texas is one of a few states that don’t allow high school players to profit off NIL. Ewers' decision to leave will undoubtedly have an impact on other players who are looking to make money off their NIL and the UIL could feel pressure.
While you may think other high school students could take the same path as Ewers, Ewers is graduating from high school. According to his announcement post on Twitter, he only has one class left to complete to earn his high school degree.
College coaches might not want to begin eligibility earlier than they have to. Most players end up sitting a year once they get to college and bringing in players who are younger and have less experience and development won’t help the program. Colleges also only have so many scholarships to award each year.
So while there could be some players leaving early for college like Ewers, don’t expect it to become a huge thing. Ewers is simply one of the best and most hyped players in the country.
