PLAINVIEW, TX – Three college students were killed in an afternoon crash on Saturday afternoon near Plainview.
According to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office, first responders were dispatched to the intersection of FM 2286 and FM 2301 for reports of a major motor vehicle accident.
When officers arrived at the scene they observed a black SUV and a semi involved in a crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed the SUV failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the rear axle of the semi.
The impact caused the SUV to roll and end up in a nearby bar ditch.
The three individuals in the SUV died at the scene. They were identified as 24-year-old Brian Anthony Anderson, 20-year-old Christian Angel Orozco, and 19-year-old Elena Mia Vasquez. All three were students at Wayland Baptist University and affiliated with the university's wrestling program.
The driver of the semi was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries
Wayland Baptist Unversity issued a statement following the fatal crash.
“We are so devastated by this terrible loss of life. Our Wayland family, including our Board of Trustees, are praying for the families of these students. We grieve with them and we pray for peace and comfort during these unimaginable circumstances," said WBU President, Dr. Bobby Hall. "
“All three were just beautiful, amazing people,” said WBU Wrestling Coach Kiiler Stephens. “We are deeply saddened and my heart goes out to their families and their friends.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of our students who we lost today,” said Dr. Claude Lusk, Sr. Vice President of Operations and Student Life. “Words fall short of describing what these families are experiencing. Words also fall short of the grace, peace and comfort that we will be asking our Heavenly Father to shower on these families. We ask that you keep these students and their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
