SAN ANGELO, TX -- On Wednesday, San Angelo ISD hosted the first-ever Summer Book Patrol Pop-Up Event at Bradford Elementary. The event is part of the San Angelo Reads initiative that promotes literacy throughout the community.
"This is an extension of our community-wide literacy initiative, San Angelo Reads," said SAISD Communication Director Whitney Wood. " We are trying to inspire a love of reading. We know it is critically important for our kids to be good readers so they can be successful in their future."
Literacy is crucial to student success and SAISD is dedicated to keeping students engaged throughout the summer. Even though students are not able to access the books found in their classrooms and school libraries during the summer, there are several options for families.
Students can visit any of the three locations of the Tom Green County Library System or have access to thousands of age-appropriate books online through SORA.
The user-friendly app provides e-books right on a phone, tablet, or internet browser without needing access to a library card. For more information about SORA check out the link.
Families and friends also have the opportunity to surprise their students as a winner of the Summer Book Patrol. Nine lucky students will be selected to receive a bag of books, reading activities, snacks, and a beautiful bouquet of balloons this summer. To nominate a student fill out the nomination form online.
"We know there is sometimes learning loss in the summer and we also wanted to get out in the community and spend time with our families and students. We miss them when they are not in our schools."
The event kicked off at 10:30 a.m. and featured free shaved ice snow cones from Bahama Bucks, the H-E-BUDDY, face painting, and the chance to win book giveaways.

Working in conjunction with several community partners, the event provided students with free snacks, activities, water coloring, and STEM activities.
"Literacy is something we find so important...and we are so happy to partner with San Angelo ISD," said Ashley Amons, United Way CEO. "It is so important to keep kids engaged throughout the year, especially in the summer, and we are so happy to be part of this event."

In addition to handing out healthy snacks and drinks, H-E-B is also hosting its own literacy challenge. Young readers will have the chance to participate in the H-E-Buddy Summer Reading Club. Students who read at least 10 books will be eligible to receive a free prize. The flyer is available at your local H-E-B.
"Our founder, Florence Butt, was always a huge supporter of education. Charles Butt, the CEO and President of H-E-B, has carried that legacy to each of the stores and lets us support our communities however we can to encourage education and literacy in any way we can.
