ASU Announces Exhibit for Houston Contemporary Painter Howard Sherman

Angelo State University will present an exhibit of contemporary paintings by Houston-based artist Howard Sherman, the featured guest for the 2015 Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art. The exhibit will open Friday, Feb. 13, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The exhibit will be housed in the EFA Building’s Gallery 193 and will be open for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Friday, March 13. On Wednesday, March 11, Sherman will make a presentation titled “Shambolic Power” from 3-5 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Room 101. Both the exhibit and lecture are free and open to the public.

Since receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from the University of North Texas in 2006, Sherman has been a leader in a new generation of bombastic contemporary painters in the Texas art world. His typically human-scale canvases carry traces of his background in cartooning, offsetting the loud, raw power of his aggressive paint strokes with a playful sense of humor. His smaller works on paper show an intuitive use of material in a distilled yet assertive manner.

Sherman’s work is featured in several museum collections and is on permanent display at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Fresco Books recently published “Texas Abstract: Modern + Contemporary” by Michael Paglia and Jim Edwards with cover artwork by Sherman and including an essay and photo spread about his artworks.

The Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art is an outgrowth of the Edwards Family Trust, established in 1992 by Joseph Henry Edwards and Winona Edwards of San Angelo to provide funding for the art program in ASU’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. In addition to the lectureship, the Edwards Family Trust supports scholarships for outstanding visual art students and an artist residency program.
