SAN ANGELO, TX – For the last few years, the San Angelo Police Department has relied on Nixle alerts to inform citizens of severe weather, major crashes, and other major occurrences.
On Tuesday, the police department announced subscribers will now only receive critically important time-sensitive “Alert” messages like active shooter incidents, severe weather warnings, missing endangered children and adults, and gas leaks among others.
In order to continue receiving messages about road closures, traffic congestion, police activity, and NOAA weather rebroadcast watches will only be available via the Everbridge Mobile App and through email.
The decision to implement these changes was made after cell phone providers made a billing change. The Everbridge Mobile App is free and can be downloaded on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The change will also be helpful for subscribers with limited or shared data plans or for subscribers who want to stop receiving unwanted text messages for non-critical alerts.
Subscribers who opt to not download the app can still receive advisory messages by email -- but with a delay.
