SAN ANGELO, TX — On Saturday, May 1, San Angelo Clubhouse hosts its second annual 0.5K fundraiser. You read that right. Not a half marathon, not a 5K, but a 1/2K; about a third of a mile, or 1,600 feet. In other words, doable for everyone.
The idea is that everyone has an opportunity to cross the finish line, feel the thrill of victory, and have a little fun. We are planning the event to be unlike any other fun run/walk held in San Angelo. Participants start at a coffee bar (to provide energy to make it through), have a finger food break (sponsor pending), a nurse’s station with water, Gatorade (and, a chair to rest, of course), and then a dessert bar at the finish line.
The San Angelo Clubhouse teaches job skills and social skills to people with mental illness. Part of its mission is to encourage members to be conscious of their physical well-being, along with their mental health.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so the event comes at a special time for the organization. This event provides a fun, wellness activity, while bringing awareness to the San Angelo Clubhouse and the importance of mental health.
While the event will not exactly be calorie-free, the Clubhouse hopes many in the community can join them for a unique outdoor event that benefits the much necessary organization and its amazing people.
One in four people can expect to experience mental illness at least once in their life.
"We hope people who participate will have fun and learn a lot!" said Clubhouse director Ami Mizell-Flint.
