Coach Beard Turns Back on Red Raiders by Leaving for Rival School

LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech’s head basketball coach has turned his back on Lubbock by leaving for the rival school, the University of Texas.

According to a number of college basketball insiders, on Apr. 1, the University of Texas has hired former Texas Tech and Angelo State basketball coach Chris Beard.

Texas had just released its former men’s head basketball coach Shaka Smart after a loss to Abilene Christian University during this year’s March Madness tournament.

Beard and the Red Raiders made it farther than Texas in the March tournament since Beard has been at Texas Tech. In five seasons at Tech, Beard's led the Red Raiders to a 112-55 record with three appearances out of four NCAA Tournaments held during that span. Texas Tech advanced to the national championship game in 2019 but ultimately finished as runner-up and also had a second Elite Eight berth in that span.
