SAN ANTONIO, TX -- A Texas high school teacher was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
According to court documents, 45-year-old Jose Eduardo Hernandez was employed as a history teacher and softball coach at Lanier High School.
The subsequent investigation revealed that in 2019, Hernandez took a 16-year-old student to a motel to have non-consensual sex during school hours.
According to the arrest affidavit, the student told police she had an 8-month long relationship with Hernandez. The student confirmed they left during school hours more than 10 times.
The victim alleged Hernadez would have her skip class so they could meet up. He would then take photos and videos of the sexual encounters on his cell phone and send them to her via Snapchat.
“This defendant abused his authority and took advantage of a student who looked up to him. This sentence should send a message to anyone in a position of trust that we will not allow this in Bexar County,” said Assistant District Attorney Oscar Salinas.
Hernandez left Lanier High School at the end of the 2019 school year and was then hired at the McDowell Middle School in the Hondo Independent School District.
Hernandez pled guilty to sexual assault of a child and was sentenced to six years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division.
When Hernandez is released from prison he will be required to register as a sex offender.
