A late model red Ford Mustang struck a pedestrian early Sunday morning in Southland. Police said that they would be investigating the scene at least until 10 a.m. Sunday morning. The 911 call about a pedestrian hit by a car on the 3000 block of Grandview came in at 5:44 a.m.
The pedestrian was a female, likely in her early 20s, witnesses on the scene said. She was treated in an ambulance for a short while, and the ambulance left the scene with sirens and lights.
The driver of the Mustang underwent a field sobriety test and from our observation, he passed. Three or four witnesses are standing in the front lawn of one of the residences. It appears that all are familiar with the victim or the driver.
The police have brought in crash scene investigators and Traffic Investigator Ed Hunger is leading it.
Details of what exactly happened remain under investigation as of 8 a.m. Sunday morning. A detachment of police officers is checking on the crash victim at the hospital. We do not know the condition of the victim.
Update 8:30 a.m.
Detective Hernandez of the San Angelo Police Department said that the victim was a 21-year-old female. He said that the investigation is revealing that the driver of the Ford Mustang had just left one of the residences, had lost control on Grandview and struck the female. She was pinned between the Mustang and the black Jeep seen in the pictures above.
Initially, friends of the female did not call 911 until she started displaying signs of trauma. An eyewitness at the scene told us that the 911 call happened about 20 minutes after the crash.
Since the victim is already at a hospital, police on the scene do not know her condition yet.
Hernandez said that in this early stage of the investigation, no citations have been issued. He did not indicate if any were being considered.
We do not expect an update on this story until later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Why the hell would you wait 20 minutes to contact 911?!? Especially after being pinned between two vehicles! The victim could have internal bleeding or trauma that would not show up initially. How much do you want to bet that the driver who "lost control" was texting and driving?

PermalinkSan Angelo is the home of the Aryan Brotherhood's founder, a branch of the KKK known as the "Empire Knights" or "Christian Knights," and host to various white nationalists groups that keep the sinister side of the area's history alive. More than a few proponents of these racial ideologies are in positions of moderate to high authority, are often willing to "bend" the law by creating snags for any dissenters in order to complete their objectives, and they and those like them have made their destructive influence felt over several generations of this community's minority populations.
Nonetheless, we could safely guess that the way this incident played out had more to do with personal ties (everyone seemed to know each other) and socio-economic differences, if any class difference played a role. (One has to wonder what kind of person drives a Mustang, AND hits people with it, AND gets away with it. Sounds like rich folk, to me.)
