Legendary San Angelo Relays Return for 62nd Run

SAN ANGELO, TX – The 62nd San Angelo Relays kicked off Thursday afternoon at San Angelo Stadium with the 1A-4A schools competing in track and field.

"It is great to have the San Angelo Relays back this year after the sabbatical last year.  The San Angelo Relays will look a little different than it has been in the past due to the fact that we have to follow UIL protocols when it comes to the number of teams that can attend.  We look forward to having these teams and their fans visit San Angelo and enjoy the great atmosphere!," said SAISD Executive Director of Athletics Rodney Chant. "Thank you to our volunteers, workers, [Assistant Athletic Director] Mark Baker and our coaches and the job that they do to put on a first class event, without them this track meet could not happen!  We look forward to seeing everybody out at the meet on Thursday and Friday."

Twelve schools from around West Texas will compete in the relays including Abilene High, Abilene Wylie, Ballinger, Big Spring, Crane, Jim Ned, Ozona, Odessa Permian, and Sonora in addition to our own SAISD High Schools - Central and Lake View.

The relays began with the 1A-4A classification schools competing on Thursday followed by the 5A and 6A schools competing on Friday. The relays begin at 1pm both days.

Athletes will compete in track events including hurdles, relays and sprints as well as field events including the pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and high jump.

Tickets are available for purchase at the stadium gate for $3 for adults and $2 for students.

San Angelo ISD welcomes the opportunity to support UIL programs and our student athletes while benefiting the local economy. Visitors attending the games may purchase goods and services from local businesses including eating and getting gas, which also means more money from sales tax for the community.

San Angelo ISD will continue use of the masks at activities and athletic venues, including the San Angelo Relays. We ask that attendees and spectators also continue to follow social distancing guidelines at the relays.
