After 12 Years Brent Davis Bids Farewell

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The San Angelo Central football program will have a new head coach roaming the sidelines at San Angelo Stadium this fall.

After serving 12 years leading San Angelo Central SAISD announced this morning that Davis will be leaving the program and has accepted a position with Gregory-Portland ISD in the Corpus Christi-area. 

“It’s been the best job I’ve ever had. I have a lot of emotion in leaving that I’ve never had
before,” said Davis. “Central High School and San Angelo hold a place in my heart. It’s been a fun ride. The best thing about San Angelo is the people.”

Davis took over the Central program in 2009 following a rough 0-10 season only to rebuild and transform the Bobcats into a top tier program in Texas highlighted by six district championships, three area titles, and 11 consecutive playoff appearances while compiling a 95-46 overall record and the title of the winningest head coach in program history. 

“Coach Davis has done a great job with the players and staff at Central and worked hard to
build success over the last 12 years. We look forward to continuing a legacy of success, and
wish him all the luck in his new endeavor with Gregory-Portland,” said SAISD Executive
Athletic Director Rodney Chant.

Davis's decision to leave was tied to his family noting that he enjoyed his time in San Angelo but the driving force behind his departure was based on family aspects. 

In the search to fill the position, SAISD is working with Dr. Curtis Culwell, a former
Superintendent in Lubbock and Garland, Texas, and long-time member of the University
Scholastic League (UIL) Legislative Committee. SAISD and Dr. Culwell will identify and vet both internal and external potential candidates and prepare for the interview process.

The Bobcat football staff and players were informed of Davis's planned departure in a team meeting on Thursday morning. Offensive Coordinator Kevin Crane will assume the role of interim head football coach/campus athletic coordinator. Crane could be considered a likely candidate to succeed Davis as the Bobcats new head coach.
