Dumped Ashes Were Cause of Tuesday Morning Structure Fire

A structure fire erupted mid-morning at 10:30 a.m. in the 600 block of 44th Street. Bellowing black smoke was seen for miles around as the radio call was answered by the firefighters at San Angelo Fire Department’s Station 6. They found the location quickly, indicating that they too could see the smoke.

Fire Marshal Ross Coleman was at the scene investigating. He said that the initial finding on the cause was old ashes.

“The owner of the house dumped ashes that he thought were already extinguished,” Coleman said. But once the ashes were outside in the brisk wind, the ashes reignited into flames and spread until the flames consumed a secondary structure on the property. Coleman said that there were no flammable liquids or substances in the structure.

The fire was knocked down very quickly and there were no injuries.
