Airmed 1 Life Flights Victim from Major Crash on U.S. 87

A major motor vehicle accident on U.S. 87 south near Vancourt southeast of San Angelo sent one, the driver of a Honda Civic, to Shannon Medical Center via the air ambulance, Airmed 1.

At the scene, Wall VFD is tending to a scene while the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers investigate the crash and direct traffic around the scene.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 87 are closed near the intersection of Roberts Road. Only one vehicle is visible and it appears that it collided with the guardrail of the bridge.

We will update this story as more information is available.

Update 3 p.m.

Texas DPS Trooper Scott Keane is the investigator. Here is what he has determined as of right now:

Shortly after 1 p.m., a 2008 Honda Civic was traveling north on U.S. 87 approaching the Lipan Creek bridge near Vancourt, southeast of San Angelo. The driver appeared to have driven off the left side of the roadway. The driver then overcorrected to the right and ran into the guardrail of the bridge on the right side of the roadway.

Troopers said that the entire crash sequence occupied approximately 500 feet of forward roadway.

The Wall VFD retrieved the car’s “black box” and that will be used to continue the investigation. DPS has not determined if the Civic was travelling at a high rate of speed.

The driver sustained major injuries, and DPS troopers at the crash scene said that the driver’s next-of-kin have not been notified. No names have been released.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the Civic had only a driver. There were no passengers.
