Robert E. Lee Name Change on School Board Agenda

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo Independent School District Trustees Monday evening may vote to retain or rename Robert E. Lee Middle School after four months of public hearings and taking public comment.

According to the agenda, administrators recommend the board follow local board policy which gives the board the authority to change the name of a school if certain criteria are followed.  Chief among that criteria is; "The Board may rename an existing facility should an honoree discredit him or herself, the District, or the community."

For more detailed information about the proposed change, go here.

According to the agenda item, if the board votes to change the name, nominations for a new name must be submitted in writing to the Superintendent including background information.  The Superintendent will then review all the nominations and place the recommendations on the agenda for the next two regular board meetings.  The school board will then receive public comments and select a new name at the second meeting.

The SAISD board of trustees meets at 5:45 p.m. Monday.

The Robert E. Lee name change is no. 10 on the agenda.
