Man Apprehended After Fleeing Rollover at Ave. L and Austin St.

A motor vehicle crash involving a white Dodge Avenger and a silver F-350 Powerstroke has blocked lanes on Austin and Ave. L, where the Avenger lies upside down in the 700 block of the street.

Austin St. northbound is currently closed and westbound traffic on Ave. L is being diverted southbound on Austin.

Witnesses on scene reported that the driver of the Avenger fled after the crash, but he has since been apprehended and is has turned down medical treatment.

Injuries have not yet been reported as a result of the crash.

The F-350 is parked sideways on Austin St. and sustained damage to the rear of the vehicle.

Update 1:38 p.m.

Traffic Investigator Ed Hunger said the Ford was traveling northbound on Austin St., stopped at the stop sign, then proceeded through the intersection, when the Avenger, northbound on Ave. L and traveling at a high rate of speed, ran the stop sign and crashed into the back right panel of the truck.

As a result of the impact, the car spun clockwise and rolled. The driver of the Avenger then leapt out of the vehicle and fled on foot. He was apprehended approximately a block and a half away as he flagged another vehicle down and jumped into the backseat.

Hunger said he was pulling up behind the vehicle as the man got inside, so the driver of the flagged-down vehicle never moved.

The man has been identified as 41-year-old Steve Montemayor. Hunger said he had some city warrants, which may be the reason he ran from the scene.

The man will be cited for disregarding a stop sign, failing to stop and leave information, and likely, for no insurance.

Steve Montemayor. was transported to the hospital by police, Hunger said. The driver of the F-350 was taken to the hospital by ambulance for non-incapacitating injuries.
