City Celebrates National Museum Day With Special Prize

SAN ANGELO, TX —In honor of National Museum Day celebrated on September 26, San Angelo museums are offering patrons a chance to win a special prize.

National Museum Day recognizes the nation’s thousands of museums that preserve heritage, educate and serve citizens, and help boost the tourism economies of local communities.

According to the San Angelo Convention and Visitor Bureau, San Angelo’s local tourism industry represents $225 million of economic activity, supporting 3,200 jobs each year.

All guests who visit any of the five museums in San Angelo will receive a card they can have punched at each location. All five museums will be open free of charge with some having special programs, exhibits and events. 

• Fort Concho: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Railway Museum: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Miss Hattie’s Museum: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. 
• Nature Center: noon to 5 p.m.

After visiting at least three museums, a guest will be eligible for a drawing of a special gift basket sponsored by San Angelo’s five museums. Guests may leave their cards at any one site to be collected for the drawing on Monday.

“San Angelo is fortunate to have outstanding natural attractions such as its lakes and the Concho River,” said Bayes said Diann Bayes of the San Angelo Convention and Visitor Bureau. “And our five museums and well-known annual events with the arts and music offerings continue to make our city a fun destination.”

The following events will be going on this month at the local museums.

The “The Life and Times of Texas Icon, Charles Goodnight” exhibit remains at the Fort Concho Barracks 1 Visitor Center. The fort’s gun crew will be firing hourly salutes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The two newest displays at the Museum of Fine Arts are “True Texas: Folk and Traditional Arts of the ConchoValley” and the Angelo State University Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition. 

The Railway Museum will include five model train exhibits, static trains, train artifacts, and a historic photo display.

Miss Hattie’s will offer free self-guided tours, with several staff members there to answer questions.

The Nature Center will feature special displays in accordance with a “skins and skulls” theme. Admission will be free.
