SAN ANTONIO, TX — After the video of a 3-year-old smoking a “marijuana blunt” went viral on social media, the toddler’s older sister and her boyfriend have been arrested.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office 18-year-old, Larissa Contrera was arrested four days after the video was posted. In the video, the adults in the background can be heard encouraging the little boy to smoke. The video also shows the boy getting sick and coughing.
“It was very apparent the little boy in the video was encouraged to smoke what we now know is marijuana and was becoming physically ill as a result by it and this suspect along with others was making joy of it,” said Sheriff Salazar. “So, it’s a heartbreaking case.”
According to Salazar, in addition to the viral video, Contrera made live video days later where she allegedly confessed to the crime.
“As if social media being her downfall wasn’t enough for her, she also, while basically giving the information to investigators, live-streamed some of that, which now turns out to be part of a confession,” said Salazar.
Before being arrested Contrera spoke with a local media outlet about the incident.
According to Contrera, her baby brother was recorded by a man she met outside her aunt’s home. This was the same person who brought the drugs into the car.
Contrera’s boyfriend, 19-year-old Thomas Rey Esquivel, was the one that handed the three-year-old the weed.
"The blunt was rolled, they lit it and then the passenger handed it and he hit it two to three times and then he took it away and then [the toddler] went and grabbed it back and he hit it and that's when I got him off the car and I told him he needed to go inside," said Contrera.
According to Contrera, she was not in the right state of mind to stop it from happening.
"At the moment, I was high myself,” said Contrera.
The suspect expressed regret for allowing her sibling to be put in that situation.
“It makes me feel like ****, it makes me feel like I’m some **** up person, I feel terrible,” said Contrera.
In an attempt to own up her mistake Contrera called CPS herself and was later arrested by sheriff’s deputies. She and her boyfriend are now facing felony child endangerment charges.
The child’s parents are not facing charges at this time. The child is at home and will have to undergo drug testing to confirm the marijuana was not laced with additional drugs.
"I love you [the boy], sissy loves you and I’m sorry, I’m sorry for everything and I’m going to do better for you," said Contrera.
