Former ASU Star Linebacker Gets First Shot at Coaching High School

SAN ANGELO, TX – A former Angelo State team captain will get his first shot at coaching high school football this year after accepting the inside linebackers job at Waller ISD.

“Being a High school football coach is something I’ve always dreamed about after growing up on the sidelines at Bellville HS,"said former Angelo State Ram Grant Aschenbeck. "I’m thrilled to begin my career at Waller ISD and to be back so close to home with my family and friends."

Aschenbeck played high school football for the East Bernard Brahmas for three years earning awards like District 13-2A New Comer of the Year, District 13-2A Most Valuable Player for two-straight years, and Second team all-state as a defensive back.

During his senior year he recorded 105 total tackles with five interceptions and three touchdowns. On offense Aschenbeck played quarterback and threw for 782 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior.

While at ASU he was named the Team Captain as a senior, was named a Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention selection, and also was named to the LSC All-Academic team. Aschenbeck recorded over 350 total tackles while on the Rams.

After Angelo State, Aschenbeck went to West Texas A&M where he served as a graduate assistant and a linebackers coach. He also assisted with breaking down film and recruitment.

Now that his playing days are over Grant is excited for the next step in his life. Luckily he will be moving to place where family is near.

"My aunt is also the Head Tennis Coach at WHS so it has made the transition easy," explained Aschenbeck. He also has family in Sonora where his father, Ross Aschenbeck, is the superintendent.

"I’m excited for the challenges 2020 brings and can’t wait to see the Bulldogs compete on Friday nights," finished Aschenbeck.

Waller will begin their campaign on Friday, Sep 25 at 7:00 PM against the Bryan Vikings in Bryan.
