SAN ANGELO, TX — The City of San Angelo is offering citizens the opportunity to plant a tree in the city through the Plant-A-Tree program this year.
According to the city, applicants can select a preferred location and tree type from a predetermined list that the City of San Angelo will plant on the applicant’s behalf.
“Trees are such a valuable asset not only to our park systems but to homes and commercial sites, as well,” said COSA in a statement. ”It has been well-documented that trees provide many attributes to communities such as providing oxygen, shade for a cooling effect, a food source, wood for burning and construction, privacy barrier, preventing soil erosion, etc.”
Examples of trees that are available include:
- bur oak
- live oak
- Texas Pistache
- Texas Elm
- bald cypress
- Chinquapin Oak
The cost for a 30-gallon or 24-inch box tree (approximately 2.5 to 3.0-inch caliper) is $350.
A few of the locations that will be available for the tree planting with this program include the following:
- Kirby Park
- Jaime Padron Memorial Park
- Texas Bank Sports Complex
- Concho River Park
- Brentwood Park
- Sulfur Springs Park
Other sites that have been more recently constructed or renovated will also be added to the list. Sites will be limited to those having adequate irrigation, proper growing space, and existing or future maintenance considerations for the newly planted tree.
Participants will also have the opportunity to memorialize or recognize an individual or group with a dedication plaque that will be placed on a concrete base or small boulder (if available) appropriate for the size of the plaque.
The cost for the 4” x 6” plaque is $250 for aluminum and $300 for bronze while the cost for the 8” x 10” plaque is $350 for aluminum and $425 for bronze.
Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation of a smaller amount without purchasing a tree or plaque can do so as well. These collective and undesignated funds will go toward the purchase of inventory trees that will be maintained by the Parks Department tree farm and planted in future years.
“Our tree planting season typically runs from October through February. Several park areas are still in need of new trees throughout San Angelo. All donations and participation with the Plant-A-Tree program are greatly appreciated.”
Anyone interested in participating in this program is asked to contact the Parks office by calling 325-657-4279.
