Tails from the Road: Levi’s Microchip
By Blaine Lauter, Animal Services Administrative Assistant
"It was the beginning of February when Animal Services received a call from a concerned citizen alerting the department about the well-being of a dog that resided in a neighboring house, having been abandoned there by its owners along with the house itself.
Animal Services Officer Krista Chipps responded immediately. Finding the dog clearly abandoned and in distress, she began the process of assuming custody. Upon closer examination of the shepherd-mix dog, a microchip was detected, which was not surprising in and of itself aside from what she found when scanning the microchip. Not only was the microchip not registered to the former residents who had abandoned the dog but in fact they had stolen the dog (named Levi) from a neighboring residence several months prior.
Right before his disappearance, Levi’s original owner took advantage of services at the 2019 Freedom Fest. Concho Valley PAWS and the City of San Angelo partnered to offer free microchips made possible from a generous donation. At that time, Levi was just a tiny pup. Imagine his owner’s surprise when Animal Services delivered a large full-grown shepherd to his door!
Thanks to the microchip’s information, Officer Chipps was able to reunite Levi with his overjoyed owner."
