SAN ANGELO, TX – The City of San Angelo has canceled the Girls Fast Pitch Midnight Madness tournament scheduled for July 24 -26.
COSA Public Information Officer Brian Groves released the following information:
A group consisting of council members and staff advised the city manager and the Mayor that the San Angelo Girls Fast Pitch Midnight Madness tournament scheduled for July 24-26 should be canceled due to the rise in local cases of COVID-19. We realize that decisions like these are frustrating and disappointing, but they are necessary in order to help prevent the spread of this disease in our community and assist local hospitals in managing capacity. Since Memorial Day, cases in Tom Green County have seen a significant rise, especially within the past few weeks. This is not unique to San Angelo. COVID-19 cases are rising statewide and the decisions we make now for our community will decide how we make it through this global pandemic.
If you take a look at where we were on Friday, June 19:
- 223 total cases
- 83 active cases
- 1 hospitalized with COVID-19
- 1 COVID-19-related death
Compare these figures less than a month later; the numbers have seen an escalation with little sign of slowing.
Tuesday, July 14:
- 1160 total cases
- 664 active cases
- 38 currently hospitalized with COVID-19
- 9 COVID-19-related deaths
Over 70% of our positive cases are people under the age of 50.
We hope that we can return to hosting and attending all of the public events that we know and love, but we first have to get through this pandemic. We need everyone in our community to do his/her part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Stay home as much as possible and wear a face covering when you do leave your house. Maintain social distancing from others and please limit your gatherings. It is going to take the whole community to get us through this trying time.
