West Texas Fair & Rodeo Will Go On This Fall

ABILENE, TX — As major events across the state are postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers of the West Texas Fair & Rodeo are determined to host the event in September.

According to KTXS, the event is scheduled to take place between September 10-19 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

According to General Manager, Rochelle Johnson, organizers are “moving forward, determined to host our beloved fair & rodeo."

"The Board and staff of the West Texas Fair & Rodeo value the health of visitors and surrounding community as well as our guests’ experiences," said Johnson. "We will continue to work diligently to survey the current conditions and prepare our facilities and staff to produce a successful, as well as, safe and clean event at our fairgrounds."

According to Johnson, the board is also considering the economic impact the cancelation of the fair could have in the area, even as COVID-19 cases continue rising in Taylor County.

"We recognize both the economic and emotional impact our event has on Abilene," Johnson said. "We hold this responsibility near our hearts as we make decisions moving forward."

Currently, outdoor events with more than 10 people must be approved by the mayor or county judge. Mayor Anthony Williams has approved the event as of this time. Last year the event welcomed more than 127,000 visitors. This year organizers hope to attract 140,000.

"We must all be aware the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is very fluid, and may require a future change of plans to protect the health, safety, and long-term economic well being of all Abilenians," said Williams in a statement to KTXS. "The West Texas Fair and Rodeo is a signature event for our city that has far-reaching benefits for many across the Big Country. I wholeheartedly hope we can enjoy this year's festivities safely together this September."
