SAN ANTONIO, TX — On Thursday morning San Antonio Police officers located a family a six inside their home. Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the family, but the husband was a member of the military.
According to KSAT, officers were dispatched to the home that morning around 10:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check after a friend notified police they hadn’t heard from the family in a while.
When officers arrived at the scene they smelled “heavy, noxious fumes” coming from inside the residence. Officers also found a cryptic message on the home’s front door containing military language.
Officers interpreted the note and according to authorities the note claimed there were “bodies or people inside of the home, animals were in the freezer, and do not enter.”
The officers were not able to access the house immediately as they had not identified the fumes coming from the house. Before entering the home, officers used drones and robots inside the home and located what they thought could be explosives. It was later determined the house did not contain explosives and was not “booby-trapped.” As a precaution, the residents near the home were evacuated.
When police were able to enter the home, they found the six family members dead in the garage. The husband and wife, both in their 30s, and their four kids ranging from 11 months to 4 years old were all deceased inside the garage.
The family’s two cats were also found inside a basket in the vehicle’s front seat. According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, evidence suggests the six deaths were not accidental and point towards a suicide using carbon monoxide.
“It’s the whole picture. it’s the adults, the children, the pets... There are no words to describe that,” said McManus.
According to authorities, it is unclear how long the family had been dead before they were discovered, but it likely the death occurred between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The husband had checked into work on Wednesday.
The family had moved into the gated community in January and according to neighbors they hardly saw the family.
