WATCH: North County Volunteers Battle Second Fire, This Time in Grape Creek

SAN ANGELO, TX - Friday afternoon has been a hectic and eventful day for the personnel of volunteer fire departments of Tom Green County. After battling a fire in Carlsbad earlier in the evening, at approximately 9:05 p.m. Grape Creek and Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire on Cinnamon Lane in Grape Creek.

The first units on the scene found a single-wide mobile home with flames coming out of the roof and the exterior wall.

An elderly man was asleep inside the home when the fire started, but he was able to evacuate the home without sustaining severe injuries. Two firefighters entered the house and managed to keep the fire contained to the kitchen area, while the rest of the house sustained heavy smoke damage.

Keeping fire watch over the outlying communities of San Angelo is not an easy task and the two volunteer firefighters who entered the home were sent to a local hospital to be treated for dehydration and cardiac-related issues, according to Grape Creek VFD Chief Jose Rivera. The firefighters had also been fighting the fire in Carlsbad earlier. They are in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Chief Rivera also provided an update regarding the fire in Carlsbad. According to Rivera, the fire is still smoldering and it is being investigated as a suspicious incident as the home that went up in flames was abandoned and had no electricity source. This makes the circumstance suspicious regarding the cause of the fire.
