LAS VEGAS, NV — Ty Harris, the San Angelo native and 21-year-old tie-down roping sensation, is currently sitting in 11th place after four rounds at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
Harris has had a series of up and down performances at the world's best known rodeo event. He failed to post a time in the first round. He was the only contestant out of fifteen to do so and fell to last place. The next day, Harris went out and finished with a 10.50; that time was the 12th best of the day. Marty Yates led the way with a 7.30, beating the second place finisher by almost a full second. Tyler Milligan had an 8.20.
In the third round, Harris bounced back with an impressive performance that propelled him to 10th in the worldwide standings. Harris tied Shad Mayfield with one of the best times of the competition thus far, a 7.30. Harris was the second cowboy to compete in the round, and former world champions Tuf Cooper and Shane Hanchey eventually beat him with a 6.90 and 7.10, respectively.
The momentum Harris had gained from that round faded away on Sunday. He posted another no-time and dropped down to 11th place with the poor outing. Adam Gray and Michael Otero also finished with a no time. Otero is currently in 12th place, and Gray is right behind him at 13.
Shane Hanchey, who won the world championship in 2013, won his second round of the rodeo with a 7.50. He now has winnings this year totaling $185,389.23. In comparison, Harris has won $120,976.37.
There are 10 total rounds, so Harris has plenty of time to improve his ranking. Round 5 with begin Monday night at 9:00 p.m. The competition is broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
