Week 10 Concho Valley HS FB Preview

SAN ANGELO, TX — With San Angelo Central on a bye this week, the smaller schools get a chance to shine.  The most important game, in terms of playoff implications, is 8-0 Christoval vs. 6-2 Miles.  Home games against tough opponents have not gone well for the Bulldogs so far this year, so they will look to have better luck on the road against the Cougars.  Sonora and Johnson City has the makings to be exciting, also, as they are both part of a three-way tie for third place in the 13-3A DII district.

Be sure to check out all area district standings, and come back on Friday night for live score updates of all the games.

Let's get into it.

Lake View 3-5 vs. Andrews 7-1 (Friday at 7:00, San Angelo Stadium)

Andrews tallied 545 yards of offense on their way to a 48-14 victory against 1-7 Big Spring last week.  Senior quarterback Brett Leach complete 21 of 27 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 42 yards and two scores on the ground.  Lake View’s defense will have a hard time trying to slow him down in this one.  During their seven game win streak, Andrews has averaged 44 points per game. On the other side of things, during their five game losing streak, Lake View has allowed 46 per outing.

Wall 8-0 at Breckenridge 1-7 (Friday at 7:30, Buckaroo Stadium)

Wall held four-star quarterback Behren Morton to just 167 yards and a touchdown in week 9.  The Eastland signal caller completed just 38% of his 26 attempts and was intercepted once.  The Hawks will get somewhat of a break Friday after a grueling two week stretch. Breckenridge earned its first win of the season against now 3-5 Early.  The biggest factor in this game will be the injuries to star running back Chase Rios (leg) and quarterback Mason Fuchs (concussion). If they cannot go, Wall will rely on defensive studs Drew Morrison, Colton Diebitsch, Bryson Ballard, and Joe Walker to take significant reps in the backfield.

Ballinger 6-2 vs. Coleman 3-5 (Friday at 7:30, Bearcat Stadium)

Tyler Vaughn completed 8 of 9 pass attempts for 188 yards and three touchdowns in the Bearcats’ shutout win against Merkel.  Running back Cooper Bean kept his impressive 2019 season going with 128 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Ballinger will likely keep the three game win streak going against Coleman.  The Bluecats have not won a game since October 4 and have suffered losses to Cisco, Anson, and Bangs since then. Last week, they allowed three different Bangs’ players to rush for over 120 yards.  The Dragons had 444 yards total on the ground.

Grape Creek 1-7 at Merkel 1-7 (Friday at 7:30, Badger Stadium)

Grape Creek could not slow down the 7th ranked Cisco Loboes in Cisco Friday evening.  The Eagles lost 53-0 for their fifth straight loss and seventh on the season.  Merkel is in the same situation.  The Badgers lost 53-0 to Ballinger and have not won since the TLCA game in late September. They beat those Eagles 41-6 two weeks before TLCA earned its only win of 2019 in Grape Creek.

TLCA 1-7 at Bangs 5-3 (Friday at 7:30, Dragon Stadium)

Five of Drew Hagler’s seven completions went for six in Anson’s 81-0 dismantling of TLCA.  The Eagles had a hard time stopping anything Anson threw at them offensively and allowed 293 rushing yards.  Bangs, meanwhile, ran all over Coleman for their second straight win. The Dragon are on the edge of a playoff birth and are sitting in fourth place behind Ballinger.

Sonora 3-5 vs. Johnson City 2-6 (Friday at 7:30, Bronco Stadium)

Sonora almost kept the momentum they gained in the Ingram Moore game going against first place Comfort, but the Cougars fell just short.  Running back Wilson Johnson had another impressive performance and score both Sonora touchdowns to go along with 187 yards. Johnson is their only consistent option.  He accounted for 76% of all of their yards gained against Comfort. The Broncos are in fourth place in their district. They have the same record as Blanco, but the Panthers own that tie-breaker.  Johnson City earned its first district win last week over Ingram Moore 24-14.

Mason 6-2 vs. Harper 2-6 (Friday at 7:30, Puncher Dome)

The Punchers shutout Center Point 42-0 last week for their fourth straight win.  They are starting to round into playoff form and back to state championship shape after two early losses.  They will likely keep the winning streak going against a struggling Harper team. The Longhorns lost to Junction last week, a team Mason defeated 62-6 the week prior.

Christoval 8-0 vs. Miles 6-2 (Friday at 7:30, Cougar Stadium)

During the Cougars’ eight game winning streak this season, their average margin of victory has been 30 points.  No one has been able to stop sensational quarterback Brayden Wilcox. Yet again, he led his team with 117 yards and 4 touchdowns passing in addition to 214 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.  He should be able to keep it going against the Bulldogs. Despite their 6-2 record, Miles feels like a distant third place in the district behind Christoval and Eldorado. In its two losses, Miles was outscored a combined 112-6.  One of those losses came against Cross Plains, a team Christoval beat 26-14 on the road. The other loss was to Eldorado.  Christoval will face them for the district championship next week.

Eldorado 7-1 at Menard 2-6 (Friday at 7:30, Findlay Field)

Unless the Eagles are looking past this week to November 8th’s highly anticipated matchup with Christoval, they should have no problem with Menard.  The Yellowjacket’s only district win was a narrow victory in Rocksprings, a team Eldorado shutout this week 42-0. The high flying Eldorado defense will be able to rack up the points against a Menard D that has allowed 36 per game.

Water Valley 4-4 at Westbrook 3-6 (Friday at 7:30, Wildcat Stadium)

After having last week off with a bye, the Water Valley Wildcats are back in action this week against Westbrook.  Both teams are currently winless in the district, but Water Valley has a chance to leapfrog Highland in the coming weeks for the number three spot.  It will be impossible for them to finish higher than that after losses to first place Sterling City (9-0) and second place Garden City (6-2).

*SA Central is on a bye this week.
