SAN ANGELO, TX — With three weeks remaining in the regular season, the 3-6A playoff race is all but secured.
Just two weeks ago, it was a foregone conclusion that Trinity would be the crowed champion and everyone else would fight for spots 2, 3, and 4. But, after Haltom outlasted the Trojans in week 7, even the coveted #1 is up for grabs.
Of the seven teams in the district, five have two losses and the other two have one. No one is undefeated, and no one is eliminated from first place contention.
So, how will the final three weeks pan out, and which four teams will be lucky enough to play in the postseason?
The safest bet is still to assume that Trinity will be the district champion. It won't be easy, but they are the most likely to do it. The Trojans have a bye this week, and then hit the road to take on Abilene. The Eagles are 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the district. Trinity cannot afford to overlook them. Abilene already has wins against Bell and Haltom, Trinity's only loss. Abilene will be fired up for it since it will be their final game of the season. It is also at home, where the Eagles are 2-2.
After that game, Trinity will return home to play the current second place Richland Rebels. Richland is also 2-1 in district but winless outside of it. As of right now
1) Trinity
2) Richland
3) SA Central
4) Abilene
5) Weatherford
6) LD Bell
7) Haltom
Trinity 7-1, 3-1 Bye
Richland 2-5, 2-1 at Haltom 3-4, 1-2
Bell 3-4, 1-2 at Central 4-4, 2-2
Abilene 3-5, 2-2 at Weatherford 5-2, 1-2
