SAN ANGELO, TX — A great slate of high school football action kicks off on Thursday with Lake View and Snyder. Most area schools are playing at home this week and look to keep their winning streaks alive or turn things around. Let's take a look at what is in store for week three:
Lake View vs Snyder (Thursday at 7:00)
Lake View is hoping to be 3-0 after Thursday for the first time since 1997. Snyder has not had the same luck and is 0-2 after a close loss to 3A Littlefield and 70-3 defeat to Brownwood. Lake View’s offensive line is looking good and has given quarterback Rodriguez time to sling the ball around the field. DB/WR Johnny Espinosa will most likely keep his incredible offensive/defensive production going. He is Rodriguez’s top target at wide-out and leads the team in interceptions.
SA Central vs Cedar Park (Friday at 7:00)
The Bobcats will get a taste of what district competition will be like when Cedar Park comes to town. The Timberwolves have a stacked defense that has allowed an average of 15.5 points against very good competition. Both offenses could struggle to move the ball. Central quarterback Brown and his playmaking ability will be an important factor to pull this one out.
Eldorado vs. Brackett (Friday at 7:30)
Eldorado lost a close road game to Winters last Friday, but are looking to bounce back at home against Brackett. It will be a tough challenge, though, as Brackett is 2-0 with decisive wins against Woodsboro and La Pryor. Eldorado needs to find success in the run game with sophomore running back Santiago Hernandez. Hernandez played very well against Winters, but did not play a major role in the second half as the Eagles tried to narrow a late deficit. Senior Jaakan Jurecek is a force on the defensive line and wherever Coach Mike Johnson puts him. He will need to play well for Eldorado to have success.
Grape Creek vs. Rocksprings (Friday 7:30)
Grape Creek is still looking for its first points of the season. They lost 28-0 to Maypearl and 47-0 to Christoval. Things might not change against against a 2-0 Rockspring team. The Angoras have a very talented offensive line and will look to overpower the struggling Eagles.
Christoval at Van Horn (Friday 7:30)
On the other side of the spectrum lies Christoval. The Cougars’ defense has not allowed a point this season with shutouts of Harper and Grape Creek. Van Horn, on the other hand, split its first two games. The Eagles lost at home to Fabens in their opener, but won on the road against winless Tornillo. Christoval is looking like a powerhouse this season after an 8-4 showing in 2018. They have already compiled 560 yards rushing largely behind junior dual threat QB Brayden Wilcox.
Wall vs. Midland Christian (Friday at 7:30)
Our game of the week takes us to Wall as the Hawks face off against non-UIL opponent Midland Christian. Wall has had an impressive start to the season by knocking off two ranked opponents in Mason and Cisco. Head Coach Houston Guy relies heavily on the run game in his triple option, but has opened the field up for senior QB Mason Fuchs to air it out. It is not quite a balanced attack, but having an experienced thrower in the backfield makes it harder for defenses to key in on the run. Midland Christian is 1-1, but could pose a tough challenge for the Hawks.
Mason at Sonora (Friday at 7:30)
Mason bounced back in week two with an impressive 43-0 win against Johnson City, but will face an opponent very similar to the Wall team that beat them 47-7. Sonora is 2-0 and coming off a 50-0 thrashing of Lamesa. The Broncos tallied an insane 573 yards rushing in the contest without a single yard through the air. Mason will have to dig in early to slow them down or Sonora will have no trouble feeding their stable of backs.
Ballinger at Colorado (Friday at 7:30)
2-0 Ballinger will travel to Colorado City to take on an 0-2 Wolves team that has struggled early. The battle of the black and red could get out of hand quickly as Colorado has only managed to score three points in its two games. Ballinger, however, put up 48 on Reagan County last week and 26 in its week one win against a Brady team that dominated Haskell a week later.
Water Valley vs. Zephyr (Friday at 7:30)
This game is gearing up for a shootout. Water Valley has dominated to start the season and has scored a combined 125 points already. Zephyr is no slouch on offense either and scored 49 and 54 points in weeks one and two, respectively.
TLCA at Cross Plains (Friday at 7:30)
TLCA cannot catch a break with its schedule and will have to make the drive northeast to Cross Plains. The Buffaloes are 2-0 with a 34-7 win against Menard and 55-0 win against Ranger. TLCA is 0-2 after being out-matched by Eldorado and Miles. The Eagles are looking to gain some momentum before district play starts, but Cross Plains will be a very tough matchup for them.
Miles vs. Roscoe Collegiate (Friday at 7:30)
The Bulldogs are 2-0 and are facing an 0-2 Roscoe Collegiate squad. Miles quarterback Davian Martinez threw for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns last week against TLCA. The signal caller also added 191 yards and 2 TD's on the ground. Roscoe has struggled keeping opposing teams out of the end zone and has allowed at least 30 points in both of its games. Head Coach Charles Boles has no plans on being any different and will likely pull out the home game victory.
