WATCH: Firefighters Respond to a Man Being Attacked by Bees in Santa Rita

SAN ANGELO, TX – Firefighters and EMS were called out to Santa Rita on Friday night for a man that was attacked by bees. 

On May 3, the San Angelo Firefighters responded to a swarm of bees attacking a man at S. Madison and Live Oak. 

The bees were taken care of and the man was treated for the stings at the scene.

As we are now in the month of May bees are becoming more and more aggressive and frequent. Dogs and small children may be seriously injured if attacked by an entire hive. 

The usual cause is a weed eater or a lawnmower. The sound and vibration "ignites their aggression,"

The following are ways to defend yourself against Honey Bees:

• Run away and cover your head and neck with a shirt. Running through tall grass or small trees will help to disrupt the bees.
• Do not stand and swat at the bees. The bees are defending their nest. You need to get away as quickly as possible.
• Take cover in a bee-proof vehicle or structure if either is available.
• Do not jump into the water or hide in bushes. The bees will wait for you to come out.
• Remove the stinger quickly by scraping it rather than by pulling it. Stingers left in the skin continue to deliver venom for up to 10 minutes
